Music Inspired By Emily – by Tony Morgan

I am Emily’s dad and I miss my girl so much. To help me cope with our tragic loss, I began writing a collection of songs inspired by my feisty, funny, and warmhearted daughter. It became therapeutic for me as I struggled with my pain. This project has grown in scope to become a music CD to support Emily’s Foundation.

Music has been part of my life from as far back as I can remember, surrounded by family members who played and sang and appreciated the pure power of music. As a Grade Eight student, I started to learn to play the bass guitar, and from that time I knew music would be a driving force in my life.

As an adult, I toured for a period of time travelling throughout Ontario and played in various venues six nights a week. In the 1980s, I decided to take on the challenge of learning to play lead guitar. In addition, I became fascinated by the harmonica and taught myself that instrument too.

I still play music on weekends in a four-piece band called Point Taken. Our repertoire focuses on the Blues and classic Rock ‘n’ Roll, but in addition, we play quite a range of styles. Occasionally, I am asked to do a solo acoustic gig in smaller, quiet venues.

I desperately miss having Emily on stage beside me.

As a toddler, she loved to listen to me play and whenever I was performing at a community event or at the park bandshell, Emily would seek me out and climb up on stage to be with her daddy. It didn’t occur to her that I was working!

As Emily grew older, she wanted to perform too. Her favourite tunes to sing were “Proud Mary” by Tina and Ike Turner and “Bad Timing” by Blue Rodeo. Imagine a little girl singing those songs like a little pro! Together, and along with her little sister Lucy, we played at events in St. Thomas like the Annual Fire Muster in Pinafore Park and the Iron Horse Festival downtown.

I cherish and miss those moments so much.

I feel that, as difficult as it is for me to continue with music sometimes, I feel Emily would be disappointed if I didn’t. So, it is for Emily that I carry on playing…..

This CD project comes straight from a grieving father’s heart to the memory of his precious daughter.
